CALEA AND MARDA LED the way to Crystal Falls, both keeping their distance from the elven, whose display of magick – however meager – had terrorized them to compliance.

Ona didn’t need the women to lead the way. She had been to Crystal Falls before and still remembered exactly where it was. She had asked the bandits to lead her there not because she needed guidance but so that she might slaughter them all in one convenient location.

The hideout behind the falls was one small cavern, deep enough for the bandits to keep dry, shallow enough for them to hear others approaching. Ona’s companions would be heard long before the three of them appeared, but there was nothing the Red Hand could do against Ona’s magick.

Calea and Marda, having seen Ona’s power, sensed what was happening and tentatively began to plead for their lives.

“We’re just two stupid kids!” Calea protested, eyes panicking.

“Yes, you are,” Ona grimly agreed.

“Please,” sobbed Marda, tears streaming from her cat-eyes. “Please, have mercy. I wanna go home to me pa. I wanna chop wood and get big and strong and take care of him. He’s too sick to make butter.”

Ona sighed. “You should have thought about that before you started stealing and killing.”

A miserable silence from the young women.

“Our choices have consequences,” Ona added. “This is yours.”

“P-Please!” Calea whispered, bubbles of snot oozing from her nostrils. She halted, bowed her face in her hands, and wept loudly, like a little child. “I wanna live!” she wailed.

Marda halted as well and put a comforting hand on the bird woman’s shaking shoulder. She looked past tall Calea at little Ona, looked at the elven down her nose, and her cat-eyes were sad as they glowed in the dark.

“Vera is the one you want,” insisted Marda. “Most of the Red Hand is just kids these days.”

Ona lifted her brows. “Just ten years ago, they were hardened, middle-aged women. What happened?”

“There’re a couple older ones left,” said Marda somberly. “They survived the massacre.”

“Massacre?” repeated Ona sharply. She began to suspect the lorna was just telling stories to save her herself. Her eyes narrowed.

“Please – it’s true!” Marda cried, eyes widening, and Ona could read the sincerity in her aura.

“All right,” sighed Ona. “Tell me.”

“No!” Calea raised her face from her hands, and her expression was one of terror. “Don’t tell her! If Vera kills her, we’ll be next!”

Marda looked at Calea with a twisted feline face. “Vera can’t kill her, Cali! Did ya forget so fast what she did to your sword? I didn’t!” Her eyes softened and she pinched Calea’s chin, a tender gesture. “Don’t ask me to watch as she kills you!”

“Tell me about the massacre!” Ona pressed. Her fingers closed and opened impatiently, tingling with harnessed power. It would be dawn soon. Her magick was stronger in the dark.

Marda looked down at Ona apologetically. “Right,” she said unhappily. “It’s normal for an old leader to get killed by the new one,” she said. She shook her head, looking haunted by some gruesome memory.
